portals
-
I started this series while going through EDMR therapy and became fascinated with the idea of memories and paintings alike serving as portals — passageways through the fog of pain to a place of greater insight, connection, and care.
I chose to paint almost exclusively with paper because its thin surface allowed for greater intimacy between myself and the materials. I allowed my body to lead, using my hands as often as my brushes to intuitively and spontaneously layer.
I often found myself pressing wet paint from paper-to-paper in a relief print style transfer. I never knew exactly how the resulting piece would look in the same way we never know quite how our environments will imprint upon us.
Like a wound or a trigger, a portal is a point-of-entry both to a sore spot and to a place of greater healing/possibility.
