hi! thanks for stopping by!

I’m ashley (she/they), a queer, multi-disciplinary artist and educator raised in Southern Kentucky and based in Portland, Maine.

My artwork has been collected internationally and exhibited and published in places like Nashville Review, Museum 21C and Art Design Consultants. My poetry chapbook, Vertebrae, was published by Dancing Girl Press in 2019.

artist statement

I create as a way of knowing and nurturing myself and those around me. I am fascinated with the ways our environments — not only physical but emotional, ideaological, and relational spaces —  shape us as humans.

I allow my natural curiosity to take precedent over past work and explore a variety of subject matter—abstracts, portraits, landscapes, and interiors — which allows me to examine our environments from multiple vantage points. Across subjects, I utilize expressionist principles that embody the tenets of a more nurturing world: delight over shame; curiosity over control; and presence over perfection.

Centering delight throughout the process, I often use my hands as much as my brushes and tools, and work with fast-drying materials like acrylic paint and pastels which tether me to the present moment and allow for intuitive layering and happy accidents.

my story

Some of my favorite childhood memories are playing in forests and pastures around my home. I felt most free and alive wandering on foot or on horseback, discovering hidden corners and treasures. In these moments, all the noise of my anxious mind faded away, and I felt a sense of wonder, peace and connection to all of life. I didn’t know it then, but my time in nature was equipping me with a language of colors, textures, movements and shapes that are foundational to my practice.

In fifth grade, I was introduced to photography through a special arts program and remember the thrill of seeing the world anew from behind the lens of the camera. I felt what I’d only previously experienced in the woods — a greater sense of curiosity and clarity, my artist self, emerging.

In high school, I fell in love with poetry and painting, crafts I would go on to study in college as I pursued a career in Montessori education. After graduating from Belmont University in 2012, I spent my twenties living in Nashville, teaching by day and creating and sharing my art by night. I began exhibiting, publishing, and selling my work. In 2018, I decided to leave the classroom to pursue creating full-time.

Currently, I live in Portland, Maine, with my spouse, poet and fiction writer Trey Adams and our rescued feral cat Nana. When I’m not in the studio, I love working with other creatives, traveling, and exploring the forests, trails, and beaches that surround our home. I feel most alive when I’m immersed in nature, the colors, shapes, and textures that inspire my practice.
